September 7th, 2008 · 3 Comments

i have seen pictures of large boards on a grid and dungeons made with 3-d walls, and mini people. what is the games full name and where can i buy it? and when i say full name i mean the basic game so we can start out because when i look online i see about 40 books and half them say basic game but look like only a book. and one last thing, my friend is paranoid about online buying so it must be a trusted store! thanks in advanced

If you are looking at D&D (the original game), you really only need 2 books: Dungeon Master Guide and the Players Handbook. On top of it, the Monsters Guide can be useful if you don’t want to come up with all the monsters and bad guys.

However if you are interested in the miniature game, you don’t need any books, just buy the Boosters and play the game (I think the boosters comes with the rules for the miniature game). However, if you want the cool looking map, you may need to acquire the parts, as they do not come with the game.

One really neat dungeon crawling miniature game is Descent from Fantasy Flight, they have the miniatures for the heroes and bad guys, maps parts, a dungeon editor that can be downloaded, and a large set of adventures to be played. Map is pretty cool, but not as professional as the ones you can see at Cons where Wizkids takes the 3D maps though.

      I hope this helps..

I think you are either thinking of HeroQuest or Advanced HeroQuest:

      http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/699

Both are very collectible and expensive these days.

That takes you to a direct link on Amazon.com, which should be a safe enough place for your friend to shop!

The walls are either self-made or from a manufactuer (like Dwarven Forge) But it is extra, most use a battlemat. Just grids with a washable pen to draw out the dimensions of the room and the furnature.

Miniatures can be bought painted or unpainted/metal or plastic. Lots of manufactures. Reaper is one manufacturer for metal or WOTC for the plastic ones. There is two sizes 30mm, 28mm, or 25mm. Usually 30mm&28mm sizes are used.

There was a boardgame (Tiles with no walls) but it was sold only in Europe, but was carried by Paizo (sold out) with two expansions in the US. You could buy it from ebay… but it is dumb down rules. I would buy Descent: something something in the Dark (the boardgame), cheaper and with the expansions a better game (Legends).

The current game is 4th Edition. There is a basic set but it is the 3.5 Edition. No word from WOTC if they are coming out with a basic set for 4th edition.

WOTC has just the combat not RPG game done with Miniatures and a paper map. The starter set could get you started.

Again, the 3d dungeon walls are sold separate or self-made.
