I'm a cashier at Wally World. I get all types of people coming in trying to buy stuff and its exciting because I live in a military town and we get people from all over. I love my job, but the one thing that grinds my gears are the people who use coupons.
First off come on! You're buying $345.86 worth of groceries and you really think that $0.40 coupon will really help you out THAT much.
Second of all some jerks will slide their ATM cards BEFORE you're done ringing them up and when you finally finish you figure they're in a rush so you hit the debit key to get the transaction done and they scream in your face because they have coupons in their pockets they never took out.
I know working retail and customer service has its rough days, but I find coupons to be the epitomy of stupidity. No we cashiers are not required to ask you if ou have coupons its the customers responsibility.
So are those who use coupons annoying?

those people who get yelly are annoying for sure. You really can save some money with coupons now and then, though. And even if it's just to save forty cents, why not? I use them somtimes but I certainly aim to be polite and handle the transaction quickly.

Only to you and to the people who are standing in line behind them.

I'm sorry that people are rude to you. Many of us, however, depend on coupons to stretch a $50 grocery budget all the way up to $55 or $60. Perhaps your problem with the people who can't handle the task of knowing when to use an ATM card should be a separate issue from those of us who are trying to get by in a struggling economy in whatever honest way possible.

Your job is to serve the customer…the customer's job is not to make you happy by not using coupons. Lighten up and do your job with a smile. Some people are on budgets….

lol..i would get kinda annoyed if they're using it and holding up the line for sure! but some people hold on to every penny that they have and we should respect them for it…some people have tight strings on their purse…just give them a break because everyone is different and that's just how they are

Well I use coupons when I can, and as silly as it sounds I like knowing I saved .40 cents on an item regardless of how much I may have spent in the store. Instead of complaining about the coupons you should just make it into your routine when you greet the customer ask them if they will be using any coupons today. By saying its not required of you, you're impending an annoyance in your life. Turn it into a positive, be polite and avoid that annoyance by asking. Thats just part of good customer service. Why get mad at the customer for something they don't know? They don't know how fast you are on the register or that if they slide their card through the machine before handing you the cupons you have to redue their order. It sounds like you're looking for those 'annoying coupon customers'.

I understand where you're coming from, but I think you should realize that those cents add up! Some of my larger shopping trips average around 115 dollars and coupons usually save me about 10 and if you ask me thats a good exchange for little cut up pieces of paper.

I think most coupons are worthless, because even with the coupon, you can buy the generic of something and still pay less.
As for the ATM card sliding, yes, I totally agree. Or the person who hands you $20 for a $2.23 bill and then suddenly goes "Oh, wait, I think have some change" after you already rang them up and started pulling out the change for the $20. Just explain to them that since they slid the card early, the machine won't let you scan coupons. They'll just have to learn the lesson the hard way.

There has to be a more practical way of dealing with this major obstacle in logistics. The store should have the employees ask the customer for their coupons before they start ringing up.

I started using coupons when I had twins. I think it's my responsibility to budget as carefully as I can now that I'm a stay at home mom. I am organized and pay quickly, I certainly hope nobody is annoyed with me. However, I do become annoyed when I recieve poor customer service in any store or restaurant. You may be more satisfied in another line of work, accepting coupons shouldn't make you this upset.

It's all part of your job. Try to be more positive about it.

I've never worked in direct retail, but I can't imagine being annoyed by those customers who use coupons "politely."
With that being said - my family frequently used coupons growing up. My mother would make her grocery list in advance and had a coupon organizer where she stored her coupons. She would then go through and pull any coupons that were applicable for the items on her list. In the store, she would see if the coupons saved her money or if she'd save more by using the generics, and appropriately cull the coupons until she had coupons only for the items she was purchasing. She would have them available when she arrived at the checkout lane, and would let the checker know.
However, I've frequently had to stand in line behind those types who spend what seems like hours digging through purses or pockets for that coupon that "they know they put somewhere" or those who have a huge organizer for coupons and just know they have a coupon for "that item."
What would be more annoying to me than coupons is Wal-Mart's policy to match prices on competitor ads. I've frequently been behind people with huge shopping carts full of groceries and advertisements for every other grocery store in town, and they have to dig through and get a price override on half of the items in their basket. I've even seen some who were so into this practice of glancing through the advertisements and planning their purchases that they tried to argue the checker into charging the higher "sale" price from another store on the same item.
I love the price-matching for competitors advertisements, don't get me wrong! But I use it primarily for the big-ticket items, and I never use the price-matching when I'm making a large shopping trip.

I find it very annoying. These people will hold up a line and what is really bad is that the person may have coupons from the competitors mixed in with the store's coupons. I feel some people will be annoying with the excessive activities of saving money. Kind of like driving all over town looking for a better deal and wasting money on gasoline doing it.
