I want to buy a custom made desktop where do I go?

May 14th, 2008 · 7 Comments

Well the console / PC battle in my head has finally finished and I have decided to buy a new PC instead of a PS3, yes i know the PC is a lot more money but that wasnt an issue, the point is, I am a rookie when it comes down to computer hardware I have an idea of what im looking for, 4gb ram, 512mb video card ddr3, windows xp, large enough power supply etc… but I am not that good at putting it together, so i figure its best if I just order a custom made computer, the system Dell has is nice but im sure they have huge markups, any other suggestions where to go? i tried newegg but again, i wouldnt be able to purchase parts by my self and then put it all together.

There are many small PC manufacturers.

My personal favorite is Performance PC in Dunkirk, Maryland.

They have been at it for years, have a very professional shop and staff.

In reality, a lot of the large PC manufacturers will offer much more PC for the money than you get with smaller companies, strictly due to volume savings. The markup on PC manufacturing is slim to horrible.

So, if a large manufacturer makes what you are looking for, it's probably the best price you will get for a coparable machine.

The problem with a large manufacturers is often proprietary board that often will limit or prevent future upgrades. Smaller custom shops really bolt together components and supply these, so upgrading them is usually very easy and cost effective.

Just put it together yourself. It isn't difficult and you'll save money.

I would suggest building it yourself, its really not as complicated as it sounds. Here's a website that will walk you through it: http://www.buildyourown.org.uk

Cyberpower,Inc. Go to this website–I bought my last 2 pcs from them. They have good pc's and will build it any way you want it. I'm really happy with the 2 computers they built for me.

      Lotus Computer, hands down.

They are awesome. They'll build you pretty much whatever you want from quality parts and support them with a full 3 year warranty, which is the best I've ever seen anywhere. I really recommend them. Just send a request for a quote for a custom computer and they'll get back to you quickly. You can put your request here: http://www.lotuspc.net/products/custom.html

By the way, they also have a really cool system designed for people just like you (game console people who want a PC platform). It's called the Nova. It's billed as the first game console that runs Windows games and is basically a media center PC with a nice video card and some serious specs. I'd go with that if you want to play Windows games with a gamepad and your TV instead of a typical PC setup. It's a bit pricy, but I know they can take that and adjust the specs to your needs and budget. Here's the info page http://www.lotuspc.net/products/nova.html

      Good luck!

Give me your exact specifications, and I can have the computer to you within 10 days or so.
