If you buy a day pass from Universal before June 1, you get the rest of 2008 free. The best prices I have seen are at funex.com.
As for hotels, you should probably try the Universal Hilton or the Holiday Inn Walk of Fame. HIWoF is one stop away on the metro Red Line.
