question about where to buy old style clothing?

July 28th, 2009 · 3 Comments

Hi there,

I’m fourteen, going into the ninth grade, and I really want to dress in a way that I can express myself. I have always loved the late 1800s style of clothing and early to mid 1900s as well. So, my question is, where in Edmonton, Canada, can I shop to find clothing that reflects the styles from that time era? Also, if you want to include photos or links, please do!

Your time and effort to answer my question will be rewarded! As I will most definitely choose a best answer.

Thanks in advance!

P.S. I am a female and I can shop anywhere including expensive stores or less expensive stores. I’m not trying to fit it or be spoiled or buy all these new clothes, I just don’t like how all teen girls dress the same and I don’t like those styles!

try searching on etsy, i find some really nice old fashioned designers there at reasonable prices, too. and i get nearly every clothing item i own from modcloth.com. if not, there’s always ebay. but really, just search it on etsy, you’ll be amazed at what you’ll find. i hope this helps : )

It used to be that you had to go to estate sales to find antique clothing, and in some cases, they can still prove to be a veritable treasure trove, but the best place as of late to shop for things like that is eBay. You can find almost anything there if you are diligent enough in your searches. There are also a few online stores that carry antique clothing, one of which is called 1860-1960. Here is the link:

There are others as well that I can’t think of presently. When you look into genuine Victorian bustle dresses and such, "expensive" is not the same sort of "expensive" as, say, a Juicy Couture sweatsuit, mind you. You may be paying upwards of a grand or more for these garments. Button shoes and the like will run you a hundred to several hundred dollars, depending on the condition and details. But there is nothing like owning and wearing a piece of history like that. It is truly amazing how well preserved some of that stuff is. The construction is absolutely remarkable.
