Where can I buy snails to feed my puffer fish.?

April 15th, 2008 · 3 Comments

I went to Petco and they gave me a few for free, but they were an appetizer to my puffers. I need a lot so I can grow them in a separate tank and feed them to my puffers occasionally. I can't seem to find them anywhere because most people find them to be annoying. I feed them frozen blood worms and frozen shrimp, but they are very picky.

wal-mart, petsmart, petco will normaly sell them. but don't feed them adults. try to by another tank or bowl to put them in so you can breed them and feed you puffer the babies

Petco or Petsmart usually have infestations of pond or Malaysian burrowing snails. My local fish store will give them to me for free because they're great tank cleaners and prolific breeders. Both types are asexual breeders, so you only need one.

Apple snails, the only other snail I can think you'd actually buy are sexual breeders, so you need a male and female to produce eggs. I'd look in the yellow pages for fish stores in your area and see if they have any pond or Malaysian snails. Otherwise, I see there are some Malaysians for sale on eBay

      wow…i understand your dilemma.
i went through 4 pet stores in my area to find simple, small aquarium snails to feed my Green Spotted Puffer…
what kind of Puffer so you have?

you are right, one would think these snails would be more readily available…
but what you find most are the quite large snails at places like Pet Smart and Pet Co….(Blue Snails, Mystery Snails…etc)
which really doesn't work that well with a juvenile Puffer!!!
And,they really are not the "best" tank cleaners…they are a huge Bio-Load…
      basically pooping machines.
If you are going for a great scavenger and tanks cleaner, a ghost shrimp or "coreycat" is the way to go….not that either may surive your Puffer ofcourse. You know how Puffers are!
Ghost Shrimp (If you want to do live)
or Sun Dried Jumbo Shrimp actually probide some shellish ruffage for their beaks as well….(I use the Sun Dried Jumbo Shrimp)
But, back to the snails, you are going for FOOD to keep those Puffy beaks trimmed!!
that is wonderful that are aware of their needs. VERY!! :)
Once you do get a hold on the snails you and you Puffer like, the smaller more pond type snails…
try setting up a small tank to breed them.
They will rapidly produce if you can the right balance of good bacterica in there.
This is what i have done…
So, now, i always have a SMALL (tiny, small) snails - medium snails on hand for my awesome juvie Puffer.
And as gets bigger, the larger ones will be on hand!
If your Puffer is fully mature and big, the larger snalis will work wonderfully.
I think it is a really smart investment for Puffer owners.
Go to a more "local" pet store and ask them for some small starter snails and what kind of small set up you need to house them….
it is pretty simple comsidering they multiply like mad the right environment…
you may be surprised at the response and info you can get from smaller, more specialized stores.
Good Luck to you and your Puff!!
      much peace :)
