I actually live in the UK and am trying to buy a car in the US. Here we have a service provided by several national companies where you can pay a fee and one of their mechanics will go and check a car for you and verify it is as described, so you don't have to be there yourself and you can rest easy there is nothing badly wrong. I've been trying to find a similar service in America and so far I've drawn a blank. Is there a national service like this?

No, we don't. And I'd advise you be very careful buying a car sight unseen. There are a lot of scams around, designed to separate you and your cash, so be very sure this is legitimate before you pay anything out.
