Purebreds in America can be a risky purchase.
Too many puppy farms without any 'quality control'.
Go to a local shelter and select from countless dogs that will be killed if they aren't adopted.
Just because it isn't 'pure' doesn't mean that it is bad.
Mixes are often superior purebreds.

I would definitely reccomend getting a dog from a breeder rather than a shelter. We were going to adopt at first too, but then we realized that there would be so many negatives to doing that. We wouldn't know the animal's history, their medical conditions, how the previous owner treated them, etc. Anyway, we finally decided on a type of breed (we chose Australian Shepherd) and I just Google searched "Australian Shepherd breeder in St. Charles, IL" (St. Charles is wehre we live). And it came up as a breeder that's only 10 minutes away in the city right next to us!! We visited them, and fell in love with a little 8 month old puppie. We're getting him next week!! Good luck!

Oh wow are u going to get some answers.. I would first see if there are some families in the area that has puppies to adopt ..Breeders are "suspicious"…NOT always, but I would check around b4 buying from a "breeder". It doesn't help where you live..you just have to be careful. Choose your best buddy carefully and not from a "puppy mill"…which is heartbreaking in and of itself..Lots of Good Luck.

You can go to a purebreed rescue. Thier are some pure breeds at the local pound or animal shelter.
Check out the link below. Their are a few dogs around your area some of them are purebred. On the first page thier is Nod and his siblings who are purebreds.

First, you should never buy a puppy from any pet store - you'll be supporting puppy mills if you do and you will not get a quality, healthy puppy.
Now as to finding a breeder, you could do a couple of things. The first and likely best would be going to a dog show. If you already know what breds your family is interested in, you can look at them at the show, talk to breeders and owners to find out more about the breed and whether they're right for your family.
The other would be to just google the breeds you're interested in. You'll come up with sights for lots of breeders. Then you can research that breeder to make sure they're reputable - do health checks on breeding stock, provide guarantees, etc.

Go to your local animal shelter/humane society and ask them.
The classified section of your local paper may have something. Also got to a Veteranarian. those are the options I would go with. Good luck! Have fun with your dog of choice.

You could contact the Kennel Club for breeders of your chosen breed, or they may know of a specific breed rescue. If you find one in a phone book ask for references. If they are a good breeder, you should be prepared to answer a lot of questions, you may have to wait for a pup, and have to visit more than once. If they don't ask questions or you can't see a pup with its parents, then don't get one from them. Please consider going to a rescue shelter, there are so many unwanted dogs and puppies needing loving homes.

Google breeders i your area online. Then go visit them, see the puppies original parents. Ask some questions. etc.

Try breed specific rescues, usually the dogs have been given up because they have to move someone has a baby and the baby has allergies, people die, the breed rescues are pretty thurough in testing their dogs and are good at matching the right dog with the right family and allot are already trained, better than a pet store that knoe nothing about the dogs personality, I have 2 gorgeous perfect greyhounds and 1 Beautiful black lab, she great, trained perfect BUT i'm in culture shock greyhounds and Labs are really different, they are all adopted.
