Any suggestions as of where to buy my camera? I have a friend who SWEARS by ebay BUT I don't know about that…
if for example I had made my mind up and wanted the Nikon D300 where should I buy it? I live in a rural area so I will be buying off of the internet.

You don't say whether you're in the UK or USA. eBay is definitely buyer beware.
Here in the UK I would suggest a proper dealer such as those listed below, I have dealt with both of them and service is good, and you have no warranty worries.

Jena I live overseas and must buy everything through the Internet myself.
B&H is a great company. I have also bought from Beach Camera, A&M Photo World, Butterfly.
Basically I would go buy the lastest edition of Popular Photography Magazine, or any of the others and look at the dealers ads in the back.
we used to have to buy good equipment at great prices from these same stores but over the phone.
I have never had any trouble with any of these companies, and brought about $3K worth of equipment in the last 2 years alone.

B&H if you're in the US. Passover's coming up, though, so they're closing for a little over a week. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/
One word of Advice: use the chat feature on their site if you have purchase questions. When you're on the phone, some of their sales people (just some, but it's happened) get cranky if you're not ready to actually make an order. The chat page… they can multitask while you're typing and figuring things out.
If you're in the UK, maybe http://www.jessops.com/ ? I've heard good things about them, but I have no personal experience.
