Actually i have the exact same problem, it says "The iTunes Store is temporarily unavaliable, Please check back later." I'm thinking that there's millions of people downloading it at once. So, I'll wait.

same thing
although i don't think it's got anything to do that too many people are trying now but that the servers were overloaded when it was released in the US and the weird thing is, that you can still use the rest of the iTunes store so I have the feeling the just linked it wrong
at least they've been trying to do stuff
because when I tried before it said there was a new version 2.0 available and now they changed it back to 1.4

First, go to apple's website and hit the button 'iPod + iTunes'. Once you are there, go to the iPod News section on the left side. The first thing there should be 'Current iPod Touch Owners', hit 'Learn More'. On the next page, the first paragraph on the left side, ends with 'Buy Now', hit that link. You may recieve a small pop-up that will ask you if you would like to continue because the next page displays secure and nonsecure materials, continue. The next page will open up iTunes and iTunes should say it is accessing iTunes store. Afterwards, exit iTunes and then reopen it. Make sure your iPod is plugged in. On the iPod Summary page, check for a new update, and it should show that the version 2.0 software is available to purchase.
This is the farthest point I've reached, for the past hour or so I've been attempting to purchase the update, but iTunes isn't cooperating.
Hope this comes of use.
