Where to buy pocky, ramune, and other Japanese/otaku trinkets in Kansas City, MO?

July 15th, 2008 · 2 Comments

There used to be a wonderful store located somewhere in Kansas City, called Mo Ikkai. I recently went to the area of this anime store to find it closed. That was where I first tasted pocky and ramune, and the otaku in me wants to find these wonderful things again.

I'm also going through a bento box phase, and I want to know if there are any places to locate these in the area.
Thank you!

Kansas City has a plethora of really good Asian groceries, which would be a really good place to start. A few I've been to and liked (even if I don't recall the exact names):

888 Market - on 87th Street at Farley in Kansas, across the street from the Johnson County Library. There are also a few other, smaller Asian stores in the immediate vicinity.

Oriental Supermarket - 103rd and Metcalf, SW of the intersection, on the North side of the strip mall. Seen it described as primarily Korean selection, ut I recall a decent variety.

? - River Market area - This one was huge in it's old location in the City Market, has since moved into a new, larger location immediately North of the City Market.

If none of these are convenient, well, there's dozens more good Asian groceries around the metro. If a web search doesn't pull up one closer to you, give us a general idea of what area you're in and we can narrow it down a bit.

EDIT: Regarding Ramune, it just occurred to me, do you mean the candy or the drink?

For the record, nearly all of these groceries carry Pocky and other candies, much in the same way that your average US grocery store carries a wide assortment of popular candy bars and other sweets. I'm pretty sure I've seen bento boxes in some of these as well, though I can't say for certain. BTW, I assume you mean the pre-packaged TV dinner variety, and not just bento-style dishes for serving home made meals in (though many of these stores will likely have those as well). Still, might want to call ahead on those.
