Where to buy spare camera batteries?

November 13th, 2008 · 3 Comments

I want to buy a spare battery for my photo camera and my video camera (Panasonic and JVC). On Ebay they have generic brand ones for like $5, in camera stores they have generic brand ones for $150. That seems like a MASSIVE difference. Is it safe to assume the ebay ones wont work? And is there some place where I can maybe get batteries for a bit cheaper than $150? (Like … should I be looking in camera stores, electronic stores, somewhere else?)
Or does anyone have any thoughts on these sites:

Damn, I just foud the actual branded one for cheap, but amazon doesn't ship electronics to Australia … http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-CGA-S007A-Rechargeable-Lithium-DMC-TZ1/dp/B000F1TD2A

If you buy of ebay their more likely to be fakes and the battery life will be shorten. But if you fork out the massive $150 (almost a new camera) you can rely on it.

Unless you buy a couple of spares off ebay and use those for a cheaper price

ebay..battery-joe or batteries plus. ALos I’ve gotton them from HongKong electronic dealers and have been pleased. Try dealextreme.com for example

Honestly, its hard to always trust ebay. I order tons of stuff online there and I’ve received it. If you are uncertain about buying the battery online look at the buyers feedback on the right side bar, anything under 90% don’t bother, they usually send it but poorly wrap the goods and damage them. The reason why ebay items are so cheap is because they are auctioned off or used (or even both) sometimes items might go higher then how much its actually sold in the store which is good for the seller.

For the choice between the store and e-bay, its all up to you. I wouldn’t consider getting a battery that is that cheap because it might be already used and worn out until its battery life is very low. If the battery is around 30-50$ then that sounds like a reasonable price not too cheap not expensive. Your best luck would be a brand new battery (not opened) because the battery’s life is at its best and there isn’t anything to worry about. I do trust in e-bay, after all why is it so popular? You can also try craigslist (it’s when you buy stuff from people close to you and you see them personally to make the purchase)

In resume, don’t worry about e-bay, go for it, don’t buy it too cheap though.

      Best of Luck
