Where's the best place to buy a cheap, good, hardrive?

April 23rd, 2008 · 5 Comments

Please answer. :) It has to be new, external and I was looking for around $50, $100, the most.
Yes, America.
I checked Circuit City, Staples, Best Buy, and Dell, and are all very good quality, but very expensive. I mean up to $500.
Has to go with a brand new, two day old, dell inspiron 1525 laptop. It has windows vista. I want this to have alot of memory, because it has to hold my Sims 2 games, (I have eight expansions packs and I'm getting more), and if anyone has Sims, you know how much memory that takes up. Thousands of MBs.
Adding on to my last detail, I want it to be portable and my computer to run fast.

you could try tigerdirect.com, or half.com. even overstock.com could work

Online, newegg.com has decent prices. In person, if you have Fry's location near you they typically have good, cheap hardware.

I did a complete overhaul on my computer. New hard drive, battery, memory upgrade. I did it all on ebay and it was dirt cheap and quality products.

You can get a new, portable external 120 gig hard drive from ebay for around $50.

If you aren't afraid of some assembly (3-4 screws plus plugging in 2 connectors…) Buy the Hard drive and External enclosure separately…

By buying an external enclosure separately.. you are free to shop around for whatever size Hard drive you WANT, get one used on eBay if you want, etc. (As long as it is Serial ATA)

Since it connects via USB, you can plug it into whatever computer you want.. desktop, laptop, friend's computer, etc. and share files.

Here is a search for external enclosures WITH the hard drive included. Probably only get about 80GBs that way for $65 +$7 shipping
      http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010150414+4026&Configurator=&Subcategory=414&description=&Ntk=&srchInDesc=

BUT if you buy them separately.. you can get MORE.

      160GB Hard drive $44.99
      http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822210004

External USB2.0 Enclosure for SATA 3.5inch drive $16.99…
      http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817193038
Comes with a $5 mail in rebate to make it only $11.99

So for around $62.99 + 10 in shipping — you get a 160GB external hard drive.

I'd go with Newegg.com they are one of the biggest online retailers of computer parts in the world. They have great prices, AND top-notch customer service.

Since they happen to be California based.. their Warehouse will probably get it to you in like 2-3days, using cheapest UPS shipping if you happen to live in CA.

They have user reviews on almost ALL products and really good photos from multiple angles and showing all the cables and parts that come with the product.

Occassionally another site will have slightly better prices..but rarely. It still pays to shop around, but I ALWAYS go to newegg FIRST and then see if anyone can beat them.
