We are looking to buy a fixer upper house and my big concern is that when we try to sell it several years from now that the master bedroom being medium sized and the only access point to the back door might be a hindrance to it being sold for a good price. Any ideas or thoughts?
To clarify you walk through the kitchen to the master bedroom and then in the master bedroom is the back door to the backyard.
The master bedroom is in the back of the house.

Wait, the back door is in the master bedroom? What?
Based on your question, I was going to say it wouldn't be a problem if the bedroom is in the back of the house, behind the kitchen … but based on your additional details, now I'm confused about where the back door is. Can you clarify?
EDIT - OK, now that I've read the additional details, I can't imagine buying a house laid out like that unless there were other things I absolutely loved about the house — maybe it's in a great location and it has a beautifully landscaped yard and the kitchen is modern and there's hardwood floors all through the house — in other words, I *could* be persuaded to still buy a house like that, but it would have to be a pretty special set of circumstances.
On the other hand, if *you* love the house and know you and your family will be happy in it, I say go for it. Some of the happiest years of my life were spent in a crowded little house that was kind of badly laid out, but my babies grew up there and I still remember it fondly.

Bad design is last to sell and for the lowest price. If you can turn that master bedroom into a family room off the kitchen and have another (bigger!) room as the master bedroom, you might be able to fix this. Otherwise, it is a righteous waste of your time, effort and money.

Many split plan homes have one or more bedrooms off of the kitchen. The door to the outside is a safety feature, if there is a fire or home intrusion you can exit the structure. It would not bother me a bit.

There could be ways to change the layout of the house but as you describe it then the master bedroom being small is a negative for resale, it being off of the kitchen may not be a problem but having to go through the master to get in or out of the backyard is a big negative.
